How Have Movies And TV Shows Affected Games?
Ever played The Witcher after watching the series? Enjoyed a LOTR title after a movie marathon (yes, okay, it was a book first, but we all know the films boosted the brand)? Or to flip nationality, what about Arknights, the anime series based on the video game that shares its name?
People tend to pay more attention to how games influence movies, jumping to attention when a famous franchise gets transformed for the silver screen... and yet, it’s perhaps even more notable when this goes in the other direction.
TV and movies are the linchpins of our world. In 2025, moviegoers in the US and Canada purchased almost 770 million tickets, with about half of Americans having gone to the theater in the past year. Higher-income Americans are slightly more likely to go to the movie theater, but the activity does span across income brackets, and of course, at-home watching is enormously popular with all demographics.
Indeed, 63% of Americans watch movies at home at least several times per week, and perhaps interestingly, Gen Z is the demographic most consistently seen at the movie theaters, with about a third attending several times per month – while millennials have a distinct preference for staying at home.
Regardless of which statistics we look at, it’s pretty plain that the movies are a core part of life for pretty much everyone – and therefore perhaps it’s not surprising that this has bled into other areas, with gaming being another enormously popular one, and thus ripe for cross-over opportunities.
Simple Games
It might seem initially that if movies were going to influence games, it would be the huge, blockbuster releases. We’re thinking the Marvel movies, LOTR, Pirates of the Caribbean, and more – and these would certainly deserve big games to correspond with their in-depth universe... but is that actually necessary?
In actual fact, it’s very common for the simpler games to satisfyingly recreate the magic of movies in engaging forms that you can drop into even if you’re not a die-hard gamer. Take, for example, online slots games. There’s a huge list of movie slots online, and here you’ll find all sorts of titles reflecting the various genres – action, comedy, drama, horror. You name it, you’ll find a slot that fits it.
These games are designed for two specific purposes: entertainment and escapism. The exact same thing that the silver screen is trying to offer. Perhaps that’s why this match works so well?
But what can you actually play in this world? Let’s take a look!
Slot Title: Movie Inspiration - Notable Game Features
Fast & Sexy: Fast & Furious - Bonus game with racing theme
Robin Hood and his Merry Wins: Prince of Thieves (and other movies) - Video slot with storyline
Secrets of a Geisha: Memoirs of a Geisha - Bonus rounds, multipliers, wilds, free spins
The Mob Heist: Any heist movie - Respins, free spins, wilds, bonus symbols
Indiana Jane: Indiana Jones franchise - Scatter symbols, free spins, multipliers
Those are just a handful of the popular slots that come into the movie slots category; there are dozens of others, satisfying every movie fan, regardless of what genre they love. If historic movies are more your thing, you might pick something like A Night With Cleo, Cleopatra’s Gold, or Caesar’s Victory. All brilliantly grab the ancient-history vibe and turn it into something dynamic and engaging. Alternatively, go for one of the other Robin Hood themed titles and enjoy watching everybody’s favorite outlaw in action.

Other Games
Of course, this phenomenon doesn’t just appear in the casino world – it's everywhere you look. Remember Ratatouille, rated the 68th most popular movie, and Pixar’s 9th most popular? Take a second to re-read those numbers and let them sink in. And then, the game, a hilarious platformer that recaptured the magic and invited the player to get involved.
Or maybe The Incredibles? Yes, we had to wait an awfully long time for the movie’s actual sequel, but its game version, The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer, came out pretty quickly. Based on those iconic final moments of The Incredibles movie, the ones that promised us a sequel in the first place, this game invites you to save the world with Mr. Incredible and Frozone.
And it’s not just the animated movies, of course, although those do tend to be popular because they translate well (we’re looking at you, Ratchet and Clank movie). How about Alfred Hitchcock Vertigo, created based on the film Vertigo? Or Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga – a game that’s based on both a series and the famous children’s toy? It’s joined by a multitude of other Lego-and-movie crossovers, proving just how much people appreciate the combination of different entertainment styles.
More and more, developers, directors, and designers are finding innovative ways to fuse the things we love into fascinating amalgamations, and there’s no question that we are here for it. Sure, not every crossover is a smash hit – but enough are that we’re bound to keep returning to this idea again and again.
