John Paul 'J.P.' Calderon was a 30-year-old Professional Beach Volleyball Player from Long Beach, California when he competed on Survivor: Cook Islands. A Cal State Long Beach graduate on a full volleyball scholarship who spent five years as assistant coach for the nationally ranked women's volleyball team, J.P. co-directed the all-girls Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club and began his pro beach career in 2004. He immediately befriended Ozzy Lusth and was on board with throwing the immunity challenge to eliminate Billy Garcia. J.P. was blindsided on Day 11 in a 7-2 vote by the women's alliance who found him bossy and annoying, becoming the first openly LGBT Latino contestant on Survivor and later appearing on The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency where he came out publicly.
